Growing up, Coach Jose practiced a variety of sports including Running, Basketball, Wrestling and Jiu-Jitsu. Martial Arts became his focus from 2007 to 2013, specifically the Japanese style of Shito-Ryu Karate-Do earning himself brown belt status. In 2010, he fell in love with CrossFit while beginning his career as a Personal Trainer. During this time he was still heavily practicing karate, so working at a gym was the perfect environment for him to study methods outside of traditional karate to give him physical advantages at his combat sparring tournaments (where he won many 1st place titles). A co-worker introduced him to the CrossFit training methodology and it was everything he was looking for as both an athlete and a trainer. It unlocked the desire to study his craft even further, while in pursuit of excellence in all that he does. His goal became to share and teach this to as many people as possible and impact their lives.
In 2012, Jose’s experience as a trainer led him to help start the first CrossFit Box in the Bronx – CrossFit SoBro, where he focused on developing their specialty classes and seminars on Endurance Running, Mobility, Gymnastics, & Foundations Beginner’s Course. From 2014 to 2018 he also spent time coaching specialties at CrossFit Queens and led high-intensity classes at their FlexFiit Studio.
Coach Jose has competed locally at events such as Flex on the Beach and served as a judge at the 2016, 2017 and 2018 CrossFit Games East Regional.
What is your favorite type of WOD? Least favorite?
My favorite type of workouts are the ones that have a combination of all three classic CrossFit training modalities: gymnastics, weightlifting, and cardio movements. Look up the CrossFit Benchmark girl “Amanda”, that is my #1. There is honestly no workout I do not like!
What is your favorite movement?
My favorite movement would have to be…the all-mighty classic and graceful gymnastics movement: The Ring Muscle-up
What is the one food you could not live without?
The one food I could not live without would have to be donuts!
What is your favorite kind of music to workout to?
I prefer music that has some bass and is big energy. A little rock here and there or old school hip-hop and rap. But to tell you the truth, I don’t discriminate because once I’m in the zone everything blends in.
What is something people may be surprised to know about you?
People may be surprised to know that I had long shoulder-length hair and used to be part of the award-winning Robotics Team at Morris High School.
How would you describe your coaching style?
I like to instill technique and discipline into my style of teaching, allowing members to feed off of that to develop mental fortitude. While I am tough on my athletes, I empathize with everyone one because I know that life has its challenges and a fitness regimen like our’s can be tough. While in class I try to make the environment fun and light whenever possible.
What are your hobbies outside of CrossFit?
In my free time (what’s that?!) I like to read comics or catch up on movies I missed on the big screen. I like to work with my hands tinkering with miniature toy models, building furniture and brushing up my artistic skills in my sketchpad. I also enjoy exploring NYC in search of culinary goodness as I also enjoying cheffing it up in the kitchen.
